Finally, One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda has provided insight into a long-debated topic among fans of the hugely popular manga. This addressed an important question regarding Zoro and his family background, a topic that has generated many theories among fans.
Fan speculation about Zoro's possible ties to the land of the samurai has been a constant topic, and this conjecture has gained momentum after Yamato's flashbacks. This particular story sheds light on Shimotsuki Oshimaru, who bears an uncanny resemblance to Zoro.
To add further depth to the mystery, a subsequent flashback revealed Zoro's village's connection to Kozaburou, who not only lived there but was also the person who gave Zoro his first set of swords. When this fact was revealed, various theories and speculations flew among fans.
Wano Country is widely considered one of the best storylines in One Piece, but it left many fans unsatisfied by not delving deeper into the mystery of Zoro's relationship with Shinobumaru and Ryoma, ancestor of the famous samurai also known as "Sword God."
What Oda said in SBS Volume 105:
"There were a lot of people asking the question 'What the heck is Zoro's lineage!?' I don't think anything can be explained in the main story anymore, so I'll announce it."
On the ship that departed from Wano Country, Shimotsuki Shinobumaru, the younger brother of Shimotsuki Furuko, encountered "that person" who had met Yamato in his childhood, Shimotsuki Oshimaru, the former daimyo of Ringo and a descendant of the famous Wano samurai Ryoma, whom Zoro meets again at Thriller Park, in other words... What does this mean...?! It's a strange and mysterious tale of fate that even Zoro himself knows nothing about.
Here the mystery of Zoro's lineage is revealed. Grandson of Benzoro, son of Arashi, grandson of Oshimaru.
