In One Piece community, I'm seeing this common misconception resurface now that Kid vs. Shanks. I've seen a lot of people say things like "Kid had no choice but to attack the Red Hair Pirates because Shanks wouldn't let him go without handing over the Poneglyph" or "Shanks never intended to fight with Kid for Poneglyph.
In manga people only saw two pages, and then Shanks gave him an ultimatum to hand over the Poneglyph: Shanks was drinking in a bar and getting into a fight with some kid when Rockstar walks in and yells, "Captain!!" He's already attacked us!"
If shanks didn't already know Kid was there, Why Rockstar would have said something like "Kid is here!!" He's attacking us! shanks won't even bother, Kid starts causing trouble.
After hearing all this from Rockstar, Shanks leaves the bar and gives Kid a final warning.
Shanks had every intention of letting Kid go without stealing if he got there without causing any trouble. The usual interpretation of this scene is "This guy brought the Poneglyph relic to our doorstep, it's too good to leave behind" but I always interpret it as "Emperors are not to be taken lightly, I'll teach him a lesson". He attacked us taking everything we earned through hard work.
